1. Department of Health 1 - High Specification Foam Recommendation

The British Government Funded Healthcare Organisation (Department of Health) recommends the use of high-specification foam over any other foam or sprung surface. This falls under Clinical Guideline 29 within the British National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, (NICE) recommendations.

Why? High Specification foam is far superior at pressure relief and maintaining optimum core body and soft tissue temperatures in order to best promote recovery and healing.

2. Department of Health 2 - High Specification Foam vs Memory Foam

High Specification Foam & Memory Foam has also been rigorously tested by the Institute for Orthopaedics & Musculoskeletal Science, Middlesex, UK. This testing falls under the Department of Health’s, Medical and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority – Analysis on High Specification and Memory Foams. MHRA 03129-0. Key testing included: pressure reduction over the whole body, heat transfer away from the mattress, vapour transfer away from the mattress and longevity of the mattress.

3. Research Synopsis - High Specification Foam vs Memory Foam

High-Specification Foam Tests:
Peak Interface Pressure at the Pelvis – 59 +/- 6 mmHg
Heat Transfer Rate - 24.2 +/- 0.1 Wm-2
Vapour Transfer Rate - 679 +/- 3 gm-2 day-1

Memory Foam Tests:
Peak Interface Pressure at the Pelvis – 95 +/- 6 mmHg
Heat Transfer Rate - 17.2 +/- 0.1 Wm-2
Vapour Transfer Rate - 586 +/- 5 gm-2 day-1

Peak Interface Pressure: Lower value demonstrates greater pressure relief away from soft tissue over the body area. Therefore the difference between the two is 36 +/- 6 mmHg substantially in high-specification foam’s favour.
Heat Transfer Rate: Higher value demonstrates cooler skin micro climate. Therefore the difference between the two is 7 +/- 0.1 Wm-2 substantially in high-specification foam’s favour.

Vapour Transfer Rate: High Value demonstrates drier skin micro climate. Therefore the difference between the two is 93 +/- 5 gm-2 day-1 substantially in high-specification foam’s favour.

Why is this important?
Such tests and subsequent endorsements ensure the UK (in conjunction with the U.S) continues to be a world leader in the research and development of medical appliances and services. As a result, memory foam in now hardy used in Healthcare, as we now know better.
This ensures our populations have every opportunity to be in the best of health, whether through reactive invention through healing and recovery appliances, or through proactive invention via education and technology availability to the mass populous (Mammoth high-specification foam mattresses).

4. Area of Research - Wound Care
The area of research and evidence where these recommendations are based fall within soft tissue (muscle, fat, adjoining tissues etc) cell regeneration and health (Wound Care). Within this environment maximising blood flow and cell repair is critical through optimum pressure relief and body temperature for both healing & preventing wounds, and reducing the risk of infection. In these Acute Healthcare settings small differences can mean the difference between life and death.
5. Extreme Health Applications in Healthcare –

High-Specification Foam High Specification foam is the only foam used with the world leading ‘Atlas’ spinal bed. A product used in specialist Spinal Injury Units, intensive Care or Orthopaedics. Click here >> to view the Atlas Bed. This is the birth place of the Mammoth Mattress.
